Triple M drops the cricket

Southern Cross Austereo today announced that Triple M will no longer broadcast coverage and commentary of cricket.

SCA’s chief operating officer John Kelly said that the network will not seek to acquire the media rights for next summer.

“After assessing our business and our line-up, we have made a commercial decision to pursue alternative summer programming,” said Kelly.

We will not be seeking a new broadcast agreement with Cricket Australia.”

Triple M had broadcast the cricket over summer for the past two seasons.

“We’ve successfully appealed to both cricket lovers and a broader radio audience, injecting comedy and entertainment, while our diverse line-up delivered knowledgeable and informative commentary,” added Triple M head of content Mike Fitzpatrick.

“I would like to thank all the talented commentators and staff who have worked on our cricket coverage for the past two years and I would like to thank Cricket Australia for the opportunity they have provided us.”

The move comes in the wake of a new multi-million dollar deal for the television rights to the cricket for Network Seven, as it departs Channel Nine, its spiritual home for many decades.

Finally! Thank God, Give us the Rock!
We always changed stations when its was on… Cricket is great but i know where I want to consume it… not on MMM
Guess Its Not the worst idea… I mean MMM thought Pink and Kelly Clarkson were once a good idea to play on a rock station.

Why is it Australia that so often when we get something/anything that really works, we cannot drop it quickly enough?
After being an ABC Cricket tragic since BEFORE they broadcast the last session of Sheffield Shield cricket live (!), I was totally wrapped by the Triple M cricket broadcast team (yep, even warmed slightly to M. Molloy!). They breathed new life and value into cricket, which the ABC has lost (sorry Jim (Maxwell), even you will have to be careful, as the ABC PC Sport Police are watching you very, very closely!).
Truthfully, as soon as I heard that Kerry O’Keeffe was on board, so was I! I was most impressed with the whole crew the more they got into it. Everyone of them!
A commercial decision? Good on you MMM management, my loss as a listener will not hurt you at all, but hopefully there will be enough of us to make some impact.
Thanks for the last 2 years anyway. The real loser in this will be cricket, at a time when Aussie cricket can ill-afford any more damage. At least, on this occasion, it is not self-inflicted!
