Triple M crowns Freddie Mercury the greatest lead singer of all time

Reporter

Triple M’s week-long Greatest Lead Singers of All Time countdown came to an epic conclusion today, with Queen frontman Freddie Mercury taking top spot as the Greatest Vocalist of All Time.

For two weeks, listeners across Australia have been voting for their favourite frontmen and women — from Freddie to Eddie, Axl to Annie Lennox, and homegrown legends like Paul Kelly and Chrissy Amphlett — with the final countdown playing out nationally across the Triple M network.

Each artist featured up to three of their biggest songs as fans listened, voted, and went into the draw to win a Harley-Davidson Fatboy valued at $38,000 by backing their favourite lead singer.

The final Top 10 was revealed by Screaming Jets frontman Dave Gleeson and ‘Dangerous’ Dave Williams during today’s Grand Finale broadcast.

The Greatest Lead Singer Countdown follows a series of listener-voted Triple M events — including Down Under by Men At Work being crowned the Greatest Song of All Time, Back in Black by AC/DC named the GOAT Album, and 1987 recognised as the Greatest Year in Music History.

Triple M’s Top 10 Greatest Vocalists of All time are as follows:

  1. Freddie Mercury, Queen
  2. Bon Scott, AC/DC
  3. Michael Hutchence, INXS
  4. Jimmy Barnes, Cold Chisel
  5. Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac
  6. Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam
  7. Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin
  8. Bruce Springsteen, The E Street Band
  9. Liam Gallagher, Oasis
  10. Jon Bon Jovi, Bon Jovi

Who votes for this, George Micheal should have been top 5 and Midge Ure should have been top ten. I think people just vote for the band and their music more than the singers voice. So sad.
