Top ten debuts for Shameless and The Squiz Today: Australian Podcast Ranker

Reporter

Celebrity and pop culture podcast Shameless and independent news title The Squiz Today both debuted in the top 10 of the February Australian Podcast Ranker released today by Triton Digital.

Shameless, the podcast for “smart people who love dumb stuff” is hosted by young Melbourne journalists Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews, while the Squiz Today has gained a strong daily following since its launch in 2017.

Ford Ennals, CEO of industry body Commercial Radio & Audio, which commissions the ranker, welcomed the independent podcast producers to the ranker.

“We are pleased to welcome Shameless Media and Squiz Media as new publishers joining the Australian Podcast Ranker.  They are successful podcast publishers who have had a huge impact on the podcast scene and their addition means that nine out of the top 10 titles this month are Australian-produced shows.  It’s also great to see the podcast ranker has developed into a representative and useful resource that assists advertisers and agencies looking to invest more money into podcasting.”

Michelle Andrews, co-founder of Shameless Media, says “We are delighted with Shameless Media’s results in the February podcast ranker. For our small business to be in the same conversation as some of the biggest media companies in Australia is extremely exciting. 2023 is set to be a big year for us – we are committed to growing Shameless Podcast and Shameless Media’s other products, so we can’t wait to see where we can go from here.”

Kate Watson, Squiz Media commercial director and podcast co-creator says “The Squiz Today podcast was Australia’s first short-form morning news update when it first hit the market in mid-2017, and we’re proud of the loyal audience we’ve built across our offerings.  By joining the Australian Podcast Ranker, we hope to attract the attention of advertisers who want to reach busy Aussie news consumers.”

CRA and IAB Australia released figures last month showing podcasting attracted $82.5 million in ad spend in Australia in 2022.

The IAB Audio State of the Nation report found that podcast advertising will continue to grow strongly in 2023 with 78% of media agencies intending to increase investment.

A total of 80.5 million podcasts were downloaded in the month of February.
