“This is beyond our control.” Jonesy & Amanda share the real reason behind their move to Drive

Reporter

Breakfast radio certainly isn’t for everyone. The hours are brutal.

But Brendan Jones and Amanda Keller are rather unique in that regard. They love the early starts.

Now, as the dust settles on the news that The Christian O’Connell Show will be replacing Jonesy & Amanda on Sydney Breakfast, the top-rating GOLD 101.7 duo have addressed the barrage of questions surrounding their move to Drive next year, with Jones saying “This is beyond our control.”

Coming to the end of their contract, Jones says he was starting to get a bit worried.

“We have an agent. They shopped us around a little bit. Other stations were interested,” said Jones.

“We didn’t want to go anywhere.”

When Jones and Keller began hosting Breakfast together, Keller had young children. Their initial goal was to clock up two years. Then five.

“When we got to ten, you said ‘No way I’m doing 20,’ says Jones. “But here we are.”

By any metric, their show has been a standout success. But Jones notes that the revenue pie is getting smaller and smaller. Content is now being provided by everyone.

“Everyone is famous now. Have you noticed that? Everyone can tell their stories on Instagram and any of those platforms.”

But he would rather lose the timeslot than lose the show.

As Keller says: “We’re just going to take our love for each other to later in the day.”

Why are they making these statements? I understand you want to be honest with your listeners, but this way you’re being negative about the station and your new opportunity. You’re also giving other media outlets the opportunity to make a fuss.

Be positive about the move to Drive Time. It’s precisely because of your strong performance in the morning and awards that you now have a platform on the entire Gold network to do Drive Time.

(And if you were so happy with WSFM/Gold and the morning show, why did you start talking to other stations? Good, reliable collaboration is a two-way street.)

I used to like listening to Amanda telling stories about her life at Bathurst uni, where I attended and Carlingford High where I was as a teacher and Coogee where my wife was living when I met her and having a son named Liam. So relatable. I won’t be listening to no pommy.

Bring back Jonesy and Amanda to morning radio please. The mob that do breakfast now are like a bunch of kids and are very “not funny” even though they are screaming with fake laughter. Does my head in. Jonesy and Amanda
had a wonderful, hilarious, serious at times show and everyone loved them. WHo is able to catch them at 3-6 pm? Kids to pick up from school, sport practise, homework to supervise, meals to prepare, the list goes on. Giving Christian the breakfast show is like sending Kyle and Jackie O to Melbourne. Big failure except in the wages department. The money they got could have kept J+A going forever. The “mighty buck” ruins too many good things

I have completely tuned out from Gold 101.7 as I can not stand the crass humour which the new hosts of the early morning show, seem to think is hilarious. The constant talking over each other is not pleasant and there is definitely less music played.
Whilst I understand change is good to move forward as generations change and so do what they tune into and listen, but I sincerely think the removal of Jonesy & Amanda has been an epic error. Their show was not only fun but also informative with current news and general knowledge bridging the generational gap.
Lets also not forget the competitions & prizes they use to offer which was only made possible by the sponsorships of many businesses who understood that Jonesy & Amanda we able to attract the listeners resulting in excellent marketing and advertising for the various businesses.

I could go on but hopefully what I have said will enlighten the powers to be and desperately ask they review their decision and bring back Jonesy & Amanda. There is no need to re-invent the wheel when it works perfectly fine already.
