The Hit Network’s Christie Hayes updates on IVF journey

The Hit Network’s and Hobart’s Hit 100.9‘s Christie Hayes has shared a deeply personal update on her ongoing IVF experience saying her latest embryo transfer was deemed ‘not viable’.

On the Dan and Christie Breakfast show she hosts with Dan Taylor, Christie emotionally reminded other women facing similar challenges that “they’re not alone” in their grief.

Christie suffered a miscarriage last year and has been candid about her IVF journey. She urged listeners with similar experiences to seek support from Miscarriage Australia at miscarriageaustralia.com.au, or through the SANDS Australia support line at 1300 308 307.

Christie said:

“I’ve experienced this failure, and you don’t want to talk about it because it can be hard to have to go and tell people because it didn’t work. I decided that I wasn’t going to have that horrendous phone call (with doctors) that I’ve had before where they tell you that your embryo transfer failed, so you didn’t get pregnant. I didn’t want to do that anymore.

So, I did what you’re not supposed to do, and I decided to do a pregnancy test at home. I took one… and I stopped for a second. I saw a double line: a positive. The next day, I went and did another one, and it was positive. A faint line, a very, very faint line, but absolutely there on each (test).

On Friday, hubby Justin and I had to go in and get the news because I had a blood test to confirm this pregnancy. I walked in and I said to them, ‘Okay, we’re here, we want to do this in person not on the phone.’ She looked at me, this beautiful nurse, and she said, ‘It’s positive but it’s not viable.’

Our hearts just broke. It’s grief all over again. That’s the worst thing with IVF, is the waiting and waiting, and then the grief, no one tells you about. You put so much time and energy into something, you try so hard, and then it’s ripped away from you.

I was angry. I was so effing angry. I would have preferred it to just be negative. It was the worst thing ever. I was so pissed off at myself for doing the test that they tell you not to do.

I wasn’t going to talk about this on-air because quite frankly, I’m tired of talking about it. I know that there’s a lot of people out there that go through this… it’s so common for people to struggle with fertility and I just want you to know that you’re not alone.”

Dan & Christie broadcast across Tasmania and Regional Victoria on the Hit Network from 6-9am weekdays, also on LiSTNR.
