Strap yourselves in for the awards hosts with the most

A week after being announced as hosts of the Australian Audio Awards, Mitch Churi and Bianca Dye cannot wait to get stuck in.

And, if their appearance on the latest ep of Wade Kingsley’s The Quarter Hour podcast is anything to go by, it’s going to be an absolute scream.

Ahead of entries closing tomorrow (Friday, March 6), both expressed their delight at being chosen to host the awards in Sydney on May 28th.

Mitch laughingly said “It’s so nice that the Australian Audio Awards went ‘Let’s show the country the state of the Australian audio industry … let’s get two unemployed hosts to do the awards!’”

“I know!!!” Bianca roared. “I was thinking that! It’s like, so hilarious!”

Of being given the hosting opportunity, Bianca said “I was so honoured. And honestly – I mean this – I was so humbled, because I thought … they could have asked anyone, right?”

“It is a bit of a scary gig, but also exciting.”

“These awards are important, because we need to champion everybody. And champion the producers! Like, you know, an Ode to Producers, the unsung heroes of radio and pods.”

Mitch said “I’m 30. I know a lot of young people who want to work in radio, and, like me, would listen to Hamish & Andy or listen to Bianca Dye or listen to Kyle & Jackie O, dream of a job in the industry, and now it really does not seem possible.”

“I think it’s a good reset for us to be the face of this new era of audio, because it goes beyond radio, and it has to. I’m pumped to see what we can do to set the tone.”

As hosts, Mitch and Bianca make a formidable team.

“We’re similar broadcasters, which I think will help us,” said Mitch. “We’re good off the cuff. So I’m excited to do it with you, Bee.”

But how is the night going to actually look?

Bianca suggests going sequinned, over-the-top ‘full f**ing cabaret,’ perhaps even throwing in a rousing rendition of ‘Don’t rain on my parade!!’

“How funny is it when you watch the hosts get up and they try so hard to crack a gag that you know they wrote in the hotel room over a gin and soda about two hours ago, and it doesn’t land?” she laughs.

“I don’t want us to be that, because that’s not us, right? We’re just naturally two humans who can come and do what we do. So do we plan something? Or do we just get up there and have fun?”

Mitch replies “I think we plan! You know, the joke is, these are the audio awards. The hidden secret of audio awards is that you can wear whatever you want. So what if we wear our pyjamas? We can go out in Peter Alexander … there’s a commercial tie-in!”
