Star Bendigo help local family

Staff Writer

Fantastic work by Alex & Flick on Star FM in Bendigo last week, and over the weekend, helping out a lcoal family who have been doing it tough.

On Friday morning, listeners Paul, Sue and Tara Johns appeared on the Breakfast show to promote an open day fundraiser they were hosting on Saturday at their newly renovated home (from the TV show Reno Rumble)….at least that’s what they thought they were there to do.

The Johns family’s daughter and sister Becky passed away during 2015 from non-Hodgkin lymphoma, caused by the anti-rejection medication she was taking for two kidney transplants she underwent. She was the recipient during her final months of smartphones and reality headsets, designed to overcome the tedious elements of treatment.

However, during the segment on-air the family was surprised with two sets of smartphones and virtual reality headsets to donate to health services, to assist other cancer patients; and the family were presented with three return airfares to New York City, their late daughters favourite city.

The gifts were donated by Adam Mackenzie from BLS Financial on behalf of the Bendigo community.

On Saturday the Johns family opened the doors of their newly renovated home, which featured on the television show Reno Rumble, to the public to raise money for the Beccky Johns Kidney Discovery Trust, a trust set up in Beccky’s honour to fund research into non-carcinogenic anti-rejection medication for transplant patients.

The photo above from the home on saturday shows the crowd that turned up.
