Spotify abruptly retires car view feature

Spotify is receiving backlash after recently retiring the car view feature without any warning or current alternative.

The Spotify car view feature simplified audio by leaving only a few button options to use while driving for simple navigation.

Many users have complained about presenting difficulties listening to Spotify while driving, saying that navigating audio on the app has now become dangerous.

Numerous queries were made on Spotify’s support page to find out where the feature had gone where staff confirmed that it is in fact being retired.

“We can confirm that we’re retiring the car view feature. This however doesn’t mean we don’t want to improve on how our users listen to Spotify while driving,” said staff.

“On the contrary, we’re actively exploring a variety of new ways to deliver the best in-car listening experience. Think of retiring car-view as something that needs to happen in an effort to make way for new innovations coming down the track.”

The timing comes with the recent development of Spotify’s ‘Car Thing’ device.

Spotify’s Car Thing is currently only available to US customers with plans for Australian release once a “chip shortage” is resolved.

The device is a popular item for older car owners without smart phone integration and had 2 million Spotify Premium users join the waiting list when invites were sent out.

The cost for a Car Thing  in Australia is set to be $110 and the removal of Spotify’s car view feature may be rolling out the mat for its arrival.
