Shad Wicker loses new 2GO gig following Hit Cairns stunt

Staff Writer

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Southern Cross Austereo has confirmed that Shad Wicker will no longer join 2GO Gosford Breakfast.

“Southern Cross Austereo sincerely apologises for the actions of Shad Wicker host of Cairns Hit Network breakfast show last week,” said the network in a statement to Radio Today.

“This conduct is not acceptable and does not live up to the social and moral code of conduct that we endorse and expect from all our people.

“We have investigated this matter thoroughly and can confirm appropriate action has been taken.

“As a consequence, Shad Wicker will no longer be joining the 2GO breakfast show as planned and a replacement will be announced in the near future.”

ORIGINAL STORY: SCA host Shad Wicker finished up his time on Breakfast at Hit Cairns last week, with a new gig at 2GO on the NSW Central Coast awaiting him.

But after an ill-advised stunt involving Primer Minister Scott Morrison, it appears that Shad has left the employ of SCA entirely and will no longer join Mandy Coolen at 2GO, according to sources.

2GO Breakfast with Shad Wicker and Mandy Coolen was slated to begin on Wednesday, January 30 – but insiders have told Radio Today that Wicker will no longer be involved.

The saga began when Wicker and fellow Hit Cairns host Carly interviewed the PM last week, and Shad asked the PM if he’d ever had “a peek” at others using the urinals within Parliament House.

The hosts then posed for a photo that was posted to both Morrison and Wicker’s social media accounts. The images have since been removed.

In the photo, Wicker could be seen holding a mug to spell the word c**t on it.

Hit Cairns GM Richard King told the Cairns Post that “appropriate action has been taken” after the nature of the stunt was revealed.

“Southern Cross Austereo sincerely apologises for the actions of Shad Wicker, host of Cairns Hit Network breakfast show, last Thursday,” said King

“This conduct is not acceptable and does not live up to the social and moral code of conduct that we endorse and expect from all our people.

“We have investigated this matter thoroughly and can confirm appropriate action has been taken.”

What an absolute joke. Shad is legitimately an incredible talent and SCA have really over stepped the mark here.

2GO dodged a bullet here putting this kid on, but I can’t help but be concerned for them right now.

The product is hardly appealing for anyone and this is one setback they really didn’t need.

This is ridiculous. You owe it to him to mentor him through this, not sack him. What now for Shad? Where does he go? How does he pay his bills? He made a mistake…nothing that thousands before him haven’t done in some guise or another.

Be the supportive organisation you are always saying you are, or is that just for show?

He got what he deserved. Wake up call for all young jocks…ethics matter. Being funny/entertaining and ethical all work together. Had he not posted it again after it was taken down maybe a warning, but he was at fault. Simple. Own the consequences of your actions. Move on.

Jesus… I was waiting to read the part where he did something irredeemably offensive and it never came…

What a joke SCA is.

Really, what was he thinking posing with a c*nt cup – i cant have thought it was going to end well? Maybe a bit extreme giving him the boot, but shouldnt he have thought of potential the consequences?

If you wouldn’t do it on air, you shouldn’t do it representing the station anywhere. It makes all of SCA look disrespectful and damages the Hit brand. No matter your stance on the Prime Minister, it’s an office of authority and deserves respect. This should be a lesson to all upcoming announcers.

Mentor your talent through mistakes rather than binning them… SCA is a great company however can’t help but be disappointed by this one.

Who at SCA would make this ridiculous call ? The GM or CD ? Surely not. How could this happen. That campaign was all over the press and television.

SCA you are not an attractive company to work for doing this.

It looks ugly!

Well well well. This bloke gets what he deserves in a big way! Karma came back to bite him. The bloke has no respect, and deserves to be punted! If you wouldn’t say it on the air, why put your co-host through this? It’s the PM! He made his bed, now lie in it!

When is Lawrence Moony getting sacked? He has a segment where he refers to people as the C word every single morning. Including Pollies, and that’s what Morrison is a Pollie, not an elected PM by the people. No matter what any one says you don’t just gain instant respect by becoming PM all you gain is an instant security detail.

I heard that this kid was signed to 2GO under strange circumstances, and now that a certain somebody is no longer with the network this was an easy way for them to essentially pull the trigger and not lock him into Breakfast.

If this bloke is sacked, why wasn’t Alan Jones, Howard Sattler, Ray Hadley, et al for all the disgusting, personal, vicious attacks on Julia Gillard?

Oh wait… there’s one rule for the right-wing radio nutjobs and another for every other poor fucker out there.

I’m baffled how the PM ‘s aides let him be in a photo with some hick town jock holding an item with offensive writing on it.

Surely radio executives including the GM Richard King were present at the time of the PM’s visit?
Where was his voice of direction??
Poor form all round.

If SCA management could kindly head over to the ‘express advocate’ facebook page and have a look at how the ‘bring back sarah & paddy’ commentary hasn’t slowed down after a year or more, that could tell you how the community feels about any of your choices lately – the kid wasn’t going to be very interesting or relatable weaved between the doobies in his skate shoes and anyone who labels themselves a comedian well…

Meh, probably for the best.

There’s not much one can do to get this show/station out of the horrid slump that it’s in.

For the last 5 years they haven’t had a decent breakfast show, but yet they keep adding in another stick of dynamite. How does this happen in such a large, structured company? Who’s responsible for this all?

Just make it a clean slate already and rebrand it to Gold FM and launch it with an all new lineup.

Hey Scott Morrison… here’s a way to get some (desperately needed) points… step up and recommend that SCA reinstate him. He made a mistake, he had a new life mapped out for him in a new town and now the rug has been pulled from under him. Another Australian on unemployment?? Do the right thing PM.

Give Witto a go. He and Mandy are a pleasure to listen to. Certainley has a lot more appeal and radio talent than Akmal. Glad he is gone.
Definately believe Witto should be given the job.
