Social Scorecard: Radio’s top social posts this week

Staff Writer

Over the next four weeks, we’re going to look at how you can create engaging videos for Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat.

Bottom line: Videos need to not only entertain but tell a story and engage — regardless of where you are posting.

Every platform needs a different strategy. Why? You need to use different techniques to tell your story on each. They all tap into different types of communities. They may have technical limitations and focus, which is why your strategy reflects the platform.

Part one: Instagram

You’ve got 15 seconds to impress — with or without sound. How are you going to do it? Take the show or station behind-the-scenes. What the hell do you crazy kids do during show prep? What’s going on between breaks? Are you heading to a station promo event? Get out your phone, log into Instagram and show your listeners what is going on.

Humanise your brand. Instagram is a personal platform, which means you have the opportunity to remind your audience that actual people are behind your brand. Don’t be afraid to use humour and emotion in your videos to entertain and inspire viewers.

Instagram is a relaxed platform which is all about being authentic. Stylise your videos and Instagram Stories to a point, but first and foremost, it’s quality people are after. Candid, off-the-cuff moments you may have captured that will be a winner.

There’s nothing wrong with using a mobile phone on a WiFi connection. In fact, that’s what I use and recommend most of the time; you do the same!

NEXT WEEK: Snapchat.

Before this week’s top posts, I’d like to point out that I do not work for any network nor do we select posts on personal preference. They are based on creativity, engagement and execution.

Our picks this week come from Hamish & Andy, The Grill Team, and Heidi, Will & Woody.

1. The Hit Network’s Hamish and Andy – ‘Crowd Surf Show’

They were so on point. The concept was hilarious, unique and told a story which transferred from on-air to socials. Listeners were made to feel like they were part of the show.

A fantastic example of a savvy social media producer who understands their demographic, the talent they work with and the show. If you take a look at their Facebook page overall, it has that great mix of stylised videos, grainier phone footage and photos. My hat goes off to you!

2. Triple M’s The Grill Team – ‘Have a beer with Triple M’

Time and time again, Southern Cross Austereo is slaying it on socials — other networks may want to take some notes.

Great strategy pushing to a station promotion, but utilising a great interactive plugin to spark interest and spike engagement. Users love that their opinion matters and this is a fab use of it. Five gold stars!

3. Hit 92.9’s Heidi, Will and Woody – ‘Book DJ Will a gig at Ku De Ta’

A combination of content across social platforms — I love how Woody bulldozed his way into getting Will a gig. Authentic, fun and a great concept. High five!
