SMOOTH launches on Foxtel

Staff Writer

Foxtel has announced that they will relaunch their suite of music channels, and as part of that launch SMOOTH, a collaboration with dmg's smoothfm.

The channel will feature music videos, long form programming and brand-funded content all within the parameters of the smooth format.

A challenge for smooth has been that is is not a national offering, which makes growing revenue harder. Whilst SMOOTH won't completely solve that issue, it certainly will be beneficial, offering advertisers a compelling multi-platform sales proposition.

Foxtel and dmg will revenue-share the new channel, which will go to air on 3 December.

DMG CEO Cathy O'Connor told News Limited:

"Smooth offers a differentiated opportunity on the Foxtel platform, which is why it's doing well on radio. The music you see on Smooth will be a seamless experience from radio to TV."

Paul Jackson, dmg Radio’s Group PD said, “After only 17 months in the radio landscape, smoothfm has exceeded expectations and targets as more listeners discover the station. This is a fantastic opportunity, a unique partnership between smoothfm and Foxtel to launch smoothfm’s new channel that really underlines the strength of the easy listening format.”

Foxtel executive director of television Brian Walsh added;

"We recognised that we had a gap in our offering for an adult contemporary music channel, Smooth ticked all the boxes in terms of what we were after. Commercially it's a win-win for both parties."
