SCA treks for mental health

A trek is defined as a long, arduous journey: especially one made on foot.

Sixteen Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) employees found out the true sense of the word during their recent 30km stint along the Mornington Penisula.

Four teams of 16 employees from the SCA Melbourne Office had been training for weeks to tackle the Coastrek walk for mental health. Each group pledged to raise $2,000 for Beyond Blue and ended up with a combined total of $11,000.

Ashlea Watt from SCA in Melbourne planned the day and said, “the trek was an amazing experience and one that our teams will never forget.”

“Walking along the beautiful beaches of Sorrento and Portsea through to the Point Nepean National Park looking out over the ocean was incredible and doing it as part of a team was great fun with plenty of banter along the way.”

Coastrek is a nationwide event taking place at different places on different days. Organised by Wild Women on Top, the event not only empowers women (with a few good men) and creates a fitness plan to better participants’ lives, but contributes much-needed donations to Beyond Blue and help individuals in need.

“Coastrek was a great opportunity for our SCA teams to connect with each other and challenge themselves while raising funds that will help Beyond Blue deliver programs and services that make a difference in the lives of people affected by mental health,” said Ashlea.

The 30km walk is certainly not for the faint of heart, but the cause made it worth the while. And if the feeling of helping wasn’t enough, the refreshments weren’t far away at the finish line.

“You could say there were a few blisters, aching feet and legs towards the end of the trek, however, it was well worth it when we reached the finish line receiving our medal, a glass of prosecco and the fulfilment of having just walked 30km in one day,” said Ashlea.

This year Coastrek has raised over $5,000,000 thanks to the help of volunteers.

More events are open across the nation this year for those wishing to join the cause.

“We would certainly recommend it to anyone looking to challenge themselves while having fun with friends,” said Ashlea.

No mention of Steve Price. He lives near Rosebud/Rye. Should’ve put on a BBQ/drinks for the weary walkers. Missed opportunity there.
