Sad newsroom departures as SCA revamp takes effect

SCA’s Melbourne newsroom has been heavily impacted by the company’s recent restructure and latest round of redundancies, with Head of Broadcast News James Royce and sports journalist Josh Conway both among the confirmed casualties.

One of the country’s most experienced radio journalists, Royce joined the company in 2018 and was central to SCA’s news leadership, having previously worked as Chief of Staff at SEN News.

Prior to his SCA role, Royce had also been a familiar news voice across ARN and NOVA Entertainment.

Conway (pictured above) was SCA’s National Sport Editor.

On the Gold Coast, journalist Leigh Giollo has parted ways with the company after more than eight years.

Over that time, he worked full-time at five different SCA offices in all four eastern states.

Giollo got his start at SCA after a three month casual stint in the Albury office. He moved to the Gold Coast in February this year, reading news for Central Queensland, Mackay and the Goldy itself, including Triple M’s Liesel, Liam & Spida Breakfast Show and Sea FM’s Bronte & Lakey

“While being made redundant was a shock, I leave with pride having delivered quality news products for more than fifteen different regions including the Gold Coast, Hobart, Bendigo and Border North East,” Giollo said on LinkedIn.

“A huge thanks to Mon Taylor, James Royce, David Dollin and James Lake for their leadership over different periods, and to the countless colleagues I now call friends.”

Giollo says he moves on feeling grateful for the opportunity, but genuinely excited for whatever comes next.

“If you or someone you know is now recruiting on the Goldy, I’m now open to work!

Earlier this month, SCA confirmed it was “evolving the way we gather and prepare news bulletins to better serve audiences across Australia, now and into the future.”

SCA says it will continue to prioritise quality localised news to audiences nationwide.

James was one of the best I worked with while at K rock and is one of the best in the biz… period. A redundancy won’t keep this good man away; you’ll will be an asset wherever you land Royce!

This is really sad to hear…
Leigh Giollo was a loved menber of ther Port Macquarie station, too. Our ‘Fake News’ segment in the brekky show wouldn’t have been the same without his creativity.

I love this quote – SCA confirmed it was “evolving the way we gather and prepare news bulletins to better serve audiences across Australia, now and into the future.”

In other words we are using AI to save money.

That AI will just scrape (steal) news content from other outlets and the industry will continue to shrink .
