Hughesy’s cup runneth over: Do wee really need this on radio?

Reporter

Call me a killjoy, but I’m not convinced that talking incessantly about bodily functions makes for great Breakfast radio.

Dave Hughes wouldn’t be the first comedian to include some of the edgier tales from his stand-up gigs on-air. But there’s edgy, and there’s gross.

In 2022, Hughes shared with unsuspecting Breakfast radio listeners his ‘Do what you’ve gotta do to get through’ approach to life, moaning to his then-2DayFM co-hosts Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan:

“I’ve been doing something night after night. And it’s not my fault!”

Hughes went on to regale his Breakfast audience with the story of how – in the absence of a backstage toilet at a Melbourne Comedy Festival venue – he would urinate into paper cups and/or glasses. Then he’d walk through the crowd on his way to chuck it out, stopping for selfies whilst clutching cups of his own wee.

And if you thought that was too much information, Hughes then went on to share how he took one of these glasses home and popped it in the family dishwasher, because it was too nice to throw away.

If you don’t find that all just a wee bit disgusting, you’re a better person than me.

And yet, four years on – it’s still being milked for cap city FM radio content.

Just last week, the infamous wee-in-a-glass saga got another outing on Sydney Breakfast radio, with Hughes joining Nova 96.9’s Ricki-Lee & Tim show to fill listeners on the backlash he’d received over ‘pee-gate.’

Lucky them.

“You’re a minute to go before showtime. You’ve got to go. So you see a glass and you think ‘Oh God, we have to go in that glass’.”

Hughesy told Coulter and Blackwell he laughed about the situation at the time.

“Then you don’t think about it again for four years until it comes up in a comment in someone’s Instagram, and all of a sudden you’re the worst person in the world.”

“I’m just trying to get through my life, guys. I’ll never do it again … I only did it a couple of times.”

When it comes to the topics of conversation I’d like to hear whilst chowing down on my Vegemite toast or smashed avo first thing in the morning, let’s just say I am not a Hughesy glass-half-full kind of listener.

And – I suspect – neither are you.
