Rick Price serenades smoothfm for 5th birthday celebrations

When your once-underdog radio station delivers a #1 FM position in Australia’s two biggest markets, what better way to celebrate its birthday than in song.

NOVA Entertainment-owned smoothfm, who turn five on Sunday, have enlisted local legend Rick Price and Sony Music to record and release a single. It’s inspired by Tony Power’s hit, Keith 98.6 and is available on Apple Music and all good digital retailers.

Group PD Paul Jackson said when he first heard Keith 98.6, he knew it was the perfect song for smoothfm, enlisting Price to transform it into an anthem for its stations.

“The song has never been covered before for commercial release so we were delighted that the publishers loved the format and sound of the station and as a result allowed us to adapt the song with both station’s frequency and Rick’s special instrumental treatment to create an unexpected surprise for listeners,” he said.

After a couple of false starts on the same frequencies, smoothfm arrived five years ago with a unique music position and the mantra to “create an easy place to relax”.

Although it launched with just a 4.1% share in Sydney and Melbourne, both stations are now #1 FM with a 9.9% share, according to the latest GfK results, increasing by over 1.1 million listeners with combined audience of 1.7 million.

I do remember back in the 80’s Mazda adapted the song for some of their commercials.
