Staff Writer

Welcome to Radio Today‘s comprehensive rolling coverage of the fourth GfK metro radio survey of 2019.

From 9:30am we’ll bring you all the market #1s and GfK ratings cards.

Check back throughout the day for the big talking points, headlines, and top takeaways from each metro market; Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

DAB+ Digital ratings will also be available on the site, as well as a game we like to call The Spin.

Later in the week, we dive deeper into each market and chat with content directors from the major networks.

Why do you separate no 1 FM and AM?

No 1 is No 1, it doesn’t matter which band.

Poor old 2DAYFM
Skating along the bottom since KandJ left
A shadow of its once great self.

973 Breakfast and Hit105 Breakfast both sliding.

What about 4BC? Remember the howls of protest when they decided to network from Sydney? They were rating in the 3’s then. Now up to 8.

Because they’re so far apart demographically: Core age for AM would be 50+ / for FM 30… Look at cume… 3AW and 2GB dominate share while a #1 FM will double or triple their cume.

It’s unfair to say 3AW is #1 when they purely dominate share because the older demographic is glued to their programs. Where as Fox has 1.2 million listeners and is by far the most listened to station.

2Dayfm breakfast is a disaster. So much for TV cross promotes on HYBPA and ” profile ” Notice that Bec and Cosi on there slide too. Someone at SCA has the midas touch.

2DayFM are all over the place.
One minute a song that’s almost 40 years old, then Justin Bieber, and they wonder why no one is listening?

Well done to Jase and PJ. Keep doing what you’re doing. It’s working.

Wow, an incredible result for 4BC (marking a real shift in older listening habits) and 4KQ (beating Hit 105 and now up there in the ratings with the FMers).

A resilient AM band in Brisbane seems to have even had some effect at Macqaurie Sports Radio 882, the strongest ratings posting that network is getting.

Compare and contrast this with Melbourne and you find the worst ratings result for 3EE (the original 3XY) of all time!

The result not so much defined by the absence of any detectable audience but rather defined by a surging SEN in mid AFL season.

So I ask Macquarie not if music is coming back to 1278. I only ask when?

Yay Jase and PJ!

Very tough gig they have but it says something about them to surge even as their competitors also go up.

Also, KIIS 1011 are simply sounding really good lately. As nobody does pure CHR anymore, KIIS is at least as good sounding as their rivals.

When will SCA learn from ARN and start to put radio people on-air instead of TV hosts and comedians. So much time has been wasted at 2Day over the past five years.

Seems 2DayFM can’t take a trick.
The station that used to have Sydney by the ears not rates a measley 3 percent in breakfast.
I’ve lost count of the line-ups since Kyle and Jackie O left.
Maybe they should just play music, and stick to one genre, not the mix of old and new they have now that pleases no one, except a small minority?

2DAYFM basket case. Shut it down turn off the transmitter it must be losing money.

Neil McKenna
9 Jul 2019 - 9:05 pm

Adam Lang says MSN has shown “further audience growth”. Melbourne is 0.2 (down from 0.4) and Sydney is 0.8 and Brisbane is 0.9 (both up 0.1). Paying all these high profile talking heads for those results is madness. It’s unsustainable and I predict music will be back sooner rather than later. Magic was getting ratings around 5 at half the cost.

I agree AM and FM should not be seperated here.

Afterall, we’re virtually now on an even playing field, with all metro stations on DAB+ digital radio (plus online if you want to throw that in there).

I’m very sorry to say because they seem like very nice people but Jase and PJ’s uplift will be shorlived. Jase & PJ now have 500k listeners but that compares to FOX FM, Gold, Nova etc who have over a 1 million listeners. Unfortunately whilst ARN should be given credit for giving young talent a go they won’t do well over the long term and will end the year with a 5 share average. Good luck to them but they aren’t major metro breakfast material yet and although they did well in Drive in New Zealand won’t cut it long term on Melbourne Breakfast. Mark my words wait and see.

To Graham I would agree. Jase and PJ could be good in Brisbane or Adelaide they will not sustain in Melbourne. I listened to the show recently – contest city a real lack of content and relateable.
Afraid they will drop back to where they were last year and ARN will go back to the drawing board again.

Sam

Graham – They did well NZ? If ranked 8th in the country is good. Then yeah sure. They had potential… They were growing… Then they left.

Southern Cross Austereo has revealed a revamped logo and new brand sound in a bid to prepare for the future of the audio industry. How about fixing poor old 104.1 2Dayfm ?
That needs a re brand more than ” SCA ” Get rid of the ” Hit ‘ brand Who’s idea was that anyway. Dobbo ?

Mark
10 Jul 2019 - 2:33 pm

No brainer, Hit Adelaide need to get Shane Lowe back to the market.

Paul
10 Jul 2019 - 4:13 pm

Agree with Mark. Shane Lowe is loved in the Adelaide market and very talented.

Hey boys
10 Jul 2019 - 6:26 pm

Hey Sam and Graham stop picking on those kiwis Jase and PJ. Biggest problem at ARN is Will and Woody they were finished at SCA when Duncan picked them up ( cheap ) Not rating not funny they’ll always be way behind Hughesy, KTM, KM and Veronica and Lewis. KIIS would be better off playing non stop music in Drive.

Mark
10 Jul 2019 - 6:40 pm

Will and Woody not going well.
5th in Sydney down 1.2%
7th in Melbourne
4th in Bris
5th in Perth
If I was Kyle and Jackie I would be pissed off having to ‘ carry ‘ these two in Sydney. They contribute nothing to the stations overall.

Congratulations to Jase and PJ.

Your content is always fresh, comical, relevant and relatable to the audience at hand.

You both have a natural bond and connection that money can’t buy. I know it will take time for people to gel to your amazing talent.

Definitely, the dark horse in breakfast radio. You both will be a household name in many years to come.

Keep up the great work. Love tuning in to your show.
