Podcast explores gender transitioning in Australia

SBS is today launching a new bilingual podcast series to celebrate the International Day of Transgender Visibility.

It’s called Transitioning In Translation, or Traduzindo a transição in Portuguese. Each of the three episodes are available in both Portuguese and English.

The series tells the stories of Brazilians Jakob and Wendlle and their experiences with gender transitioning in Australia.

Gender transition can be a difficult road to navigate but imagine starting the process in a country where you don’t speak the language very well, or don’t know the health system. Even if you do, you still have to translate your feelings to your family and friends.

For Wendlle, the podcast is actually the first step towards discussing her transition with her family.

“I asked my sister to show (my family) some videos about transgender people, non-binary people just to get started but I think this interview with SBS might be a first step for us to have this conversation in the future.”
