Patricia Karvelas to leave ABC Radio National and take up new anchoring role

Patricia Karvelas is leaving ABC Radio National to take on an expanded role with the broadcaster in 2025.

She has hosted the ABC’s flagship Breakfast news program RN Breakfast since 2021.

Karvelas – who has been with the station for ten years – also currently co-hosts the weekly political wrap podcast The Party Room with Fran Kelly.

Karvelas will move to more Australian politics-focused coverage, with details of her new audio and TV projects and anchoring role be announced in the coming weeks.

Karvelas says “After a decade it’s time to change it up and I’m ready to lean into a new cross-platform role.”

“I want to thank the ABC for the opportunities it has provided me through my decade here. It continues to be the most important public institution in the country in my view and I want to help build its connections with voters across the country.”

I’ll miss the Radio National audience enormously. There’s something magical about waking up when the country is asleep to bring the big news and conversations to the country.”

Karvelas’s replacement on RN Breakfast will be announced soon.
