Outfoxed … and a tale of two cities for Kyle & Jackie O
Melbourne’s FM Breakfast radio wars have taken another twist, with Fox FM’s Fifi, Fev & Nick now ruling the roost, wrestling back the #1 spot in GfK Survey 6, moving from 9.6 to a 10.0 share.
Nova 100’s Jase & Lauren now hold down second spot among the FMs, dropping 0.3 to a 9.6 share, with Gold 104.3’s The Christian O’Connell Show third, its share result unchanged on 8.3.
The Kyle and Jackie O Show copped a significant body blow as it works to gain a foothold in Melbourne on KIIS 101.1, falling from a 6.1 to a 5.2 share in Breakfast and shedding 71,000 listeners in cume.
In stark contrast to their latest Melbourne result, the polarising duo notched up their 46th consecutive survey as Sydney’s top FM Breakfast show, with KIIS jumping to top position overall in the Sydney market.
Kyle & Jackie O once again claimed the title as Sydney’s #1 Breakfast show overall, achieving a 13.7% share on KIIS 1065 and attracting a weekly cume audience of 735,000 listeners.
ARN remains committed to achieving similar success in Melbourne.
Addressing the latest Melbourne result, ARN’s Chief Content Officer Duncan Campbell said “In Melbourne, we’ve always recognised that building success in a new market takes time.”
“The Kyle & Jackie O Show is Australia’s most successful radio show, attracting more than 1.5 million listeners each week, and has dominated Sydney with 46 consecutive surveys at #1 FM.”
“We remain confident in our long-term growth strategy.”
Watch in abject horror as ARN proceed to make one of the most disastrous networking decisions of their natural lives. K&J only work where they are due to heritage and lack of any serious competition. Brisbane are already rejecting KIIS 973 – K&J would be a ratings death knell for them and nothing would be live or local. The mismanagement is breathtaking.
ARN, Kiis and Kyle & Jackie have demonstrated a master class on not how to launch a new show in the modern era.
You have to earn and respect an audience. ARN are failing at this.
The bigger disappointment is this survey shows less people are listening to radio.
A relatable breakfast show fits its city’s culture. This crass sound that KIIS SYD creates every day is not what Vics want, ever. It will not work. KJ has had 10 years pumping out smut to an ego-affluent city… it’s not what Melb likes, or wants. Ever. (think why Smooth went #1)

The bigger issue is really about lack of talent development. A word that is dead in Radio, worldwide! No one is thinking about what happens in 5 years. Let’s milk old heritage shows as long as we can, as far and wide as we can, and not worry about the future of the station, the network, the business… or the industry at large.
Pull the plug, cut the cord and cut your losses ARN . The experiment has failed. At least you tried.
