One door closes: Sad goodbyes at SCA

Reporter

As Rod Maldon grappled with the news yesterday that his services as Assistant Content Director at 92.5 Triple M were no longer required, he offered reassurance to other SCA staff facing a similar fate.

“Remember, the decision is a business one – not the right one.”

A week out from releasing its half yearly financial results, SCA swung the axe, with CEO John Kelly announcing further redundancies within the organisation amid challenging economic times.

“This is the most difficult part of my job and of our leaders and my thoughts are with those impacted today,” said Kelly.

The company is declining, at this stage, to say exactly how many jobs have gone.

In confirming his own departure via social media, Maldon (pictured above) showed class in the face of turmoil:

“Today, like many others, I said goodbye to a role I put my blood, sweat and tears into.”

“You roll with it, not a lot is gained by being angry or going head on with company decisions. It happens. You move on.”

“Much respect to all the talent today who have been affected.”

That talent includes Triple M’s Luke Bona, who – after nine years – signed off from his final Night Shift show at five o’clock this morning.

The phone lines ran hot as blindsided listeners seized their chance to say a final farewell.

The first sign that something might be amiss came via a Facebook post shared to The Night Shift’s official page on Wednesday night, in which Bona and producer Thomas Denham wrote:

No show this evening, so please don’t freak out if you hear just music playing.”

A constant companion for those who worked the graveyard shift, Bona’s program was broadcast each weekday morning to more than 70 radio stations across the SCA network, as well as several independent radio stations.

In 2019, Bona’s radio show was nominated for four ACRAs, including Best Talk Presenter, Best Current Affairs Presenter, the Brian White Award for Radio Journalism and Best Show Producer – Talk/Current Affairs.

Triple M Deadset Legends co-host and NRL caller Elliott Lovejoy (pictured above) confirmed his own departure on Instagram:

“After nearly seven wonderful years at Triple M, I was informed this morning my full-time services will no longer be required.”

“Not bitter, just sad. But that’s business baby. I retain a deep passion for sports and broadcasting.”

“My DM’s are absolutely open to new opportunities and I look forward to seeing what’s next.”

It’s heartbreaking to hear of people who are actually wanting to be made redundant from SCA (and getting let go after just three weeks in a job).

Triple M has an identity crisis. It tries to be a music/talkback/sports format but it doesn’t work. Talkback midnight to dawn is successful but there are no ratings hence no revenue. Music during the day with some talk then interrupted by these cricket broadcasts which suck up heaps of money to pay these ‘all-star’ commentary teams usually in non-ratings periods. Then in winter it’s footy. So if you only love music, you’ll turn off, find another station like GOLD and most likely stay there. Also the logo of MMM goes back to the rock years, so what type of music are they playing now ? Surveys have shown this is a male friendly format. Show me a station in any metropolitan market that has a successful music/talk/sports format ? It ‘s either music or talk. They would be better to re-brand and bring in some professional advisers to start anew.
