Now Is It Game On?

Staff Writer

With Malcolm Turnbull confirming Mitch is still the man to cover the Communications portfolio, will it soon be game on over media law reform?

While there were some early rumblings that Mitch might have been on the outer as the National Party may have been gunning for one of theirs in the top job of Communication’s Minister, Mitch Fifield has been reinstated to the role.

Back in March, Mitch Fifield said in an address to the National Press Club:It is absolutely critical that we offer Australian media companies the opportunity to build scale.” but only a few short months later the wheels fell off as the double dissolution election was called, just as the proposed media reform legislation was before the Senate.

So is the pressure back on for the government to act?

The plan is to scrap the “media reach rule” and the “two out of three” rule; that restricts any company from owning more than three traditional media platforms in a single market; be it print, radio or TV.

But it may not be plain sailing, Labor could put a fork in the road and block, which could have the government on the back foot needing to negotiate with some of the new blood in the Senate like Pauline Hanson and Derryn Hinch.

Interesting times ahead.
