Nine appoints Matt James as managing director in Melbourne
3AW and Nine in Melbourne have a new boss, with former global media agency executive Matt James coming on board as managing director.
He will oversee Nine’s second-largest market which includes Channel 9 Melbourne, 3AW, The Age and the Melbourne bureau of The Australian Financial Review. Melbourne also houses some of Nine’s key TV productions including Lego Masters hosted by Hamish Blake, Millionaire Hot Seat hosted by Triple M’s Eddie McGuire, and The Block.
It’s a return to the media conglomerate for James, who has previously held roles including managing director of its digital media division, then known as Mi9, and group director of Nine’s client solutions division, Powered.
He left in 2015 to join Publicis Groupe, and has since held roles agency side including Australian CEO of Publicis Media, CEO of Zenith Australia, and global CEO of Zenith Media.
James commences on November 18 and said he is excited.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to the Nine family and privileged to be joining what I know is a very passionate, dedicated and dynamic team in Victoria,” he said. “Nine continues to be the most progressive, expansive and transformative media company in Australia and I’m excited at the opportunity to be part of its continuing success for 2021 and beyond.”
He will report to Nine’s managing director of local markets and group marketing, Lizzie Young, who said James was a strong addition to the team.
“Melbourne is one of our key opportunities and Matt’s experience in driving growth for brands will be incredibly important as we consolidate the Nine Melbourne proposition locally and build on our offering for consumers and clients with the greatest brands in the market,” Young said.
“Having someone of Matt’s calibre – with his broad experience on both the media owner and agency side – is a strong addition to our state-based leadership team.”
James replaces Matt Scriven who left the business in February to spend time with his family.
