Marty Sheargold reflects on his Nova departure with Fitzy & Wippa

Former Assistant Editor
Marty Sheargold, Fitzy & Wippa

Following Marty Sheargold’s recent shock announcement that he’ll be leaving the Nova Network after 17 years, the Drive host joined Sydney Brekky team Fitzy & Wippa for a heart-to-heart.

They played back the audio of his emotional farewell announcement, which they described as “a dark day for the network”. Fitzy & Wippa then quizzed Shiggsy on his decision to leave, asking him how hard it was.

After around a minute of fluffing around with jokes, he said he “realised that [I] was taking the absolute piss” and had “taken his foot off the gas”.

“I’d been thinking about it for months and months and months,” Sheargold admitted, also explaining that COVID-19 and social isolation had played its part in the decision.

“I haven’t had a curfew since I lived with mum and dad a couple of years ago,” he joked.

“I haven’t been a hero, I’ve had a few drinks in lockdown,” he continued, before chatting about his potential replacements including the rumour that Ellen Degeneres might take over his chair.

“It’s fair to say I’m leaving at the right time”.

The fact that Marty Sheargold is leaving Nova will have zero impact on the ratings. The network needs to reduce costs and do not need highly paid on air presenters

I wonder if the breakfast show will change on Nova next year of if they will be happy with yet another year of rating around 6%

Are you serious Rob? Of course Marty’s departure will affect the ratings of that show, he’s one of the great FM broadcasters of the last 10 years.
The bigger question is, what opposing network breakfast show will he turn up on in 2021?

Sydney Nova is the poor cousin in the Nova ‘ family ‘ Its never gone that well.
It should do much better especially with zero competition from 2Dayfm.
Imagine if one day SCA get their act together, Nova could up at 4-5%

I don’t think Marty leaving would affect nova ratings given they get the replacement right and given the other 2 drive shows I think it would rate better then the other 2
