Leadership redundancies for ARN and SCA

Just weeks after ARN heralded a new era and ushered in a new slate programs for 2026, its Chief Audience and Content Officer Lauren Joyce has been made redundant.

ARN confirmed the news this morning.

Joyce said “I’ll always be grateful for the opportunities I’ve had at ARN.  It’s been a privilege to work with such a talented team and contribute to a business I genuinely care about. Across my roles here, every decision I’ve made has been with our people, our brands, and our shareholders in mind.”

“I hope I’m remembered for championing ideas from everywhere and for always pushing for the best possible outcome – for all of us. I wish the team the very best in the future.”

ARN CEO Michael Stephenson saidARN has been evolving its content operations since late 2022 as we continue to build a business that’s ready for the future. As part of the next phase, we’re reorganising our Audience & Content function to separate our core content teams from the support teams, allowing us to focus more clearly on creating and delivering great content. This restructure includes the role of Chief Content Officer, who will have sole responsibility for content creation and distribution.”

As a result of these changes, Lauren Joyce will leave ARN at the end of 2025. Lauren is an incredible strategist and respected leader who has made a significant contribution to ARN over the past seven years. She has played a pivotal role in strengthening the connection between Content and Commercial, elevating our marketing and communications capability, and helping shape ARN into the market-leading business it is today. We thank her for her leadership and the impact she has had across the organisation.”

Joyce stepped into the newly created role of Chief Audience & Content Officer at the start of this year as Duncan Campbell transitioned out of the business and has been responsible to act as spokesperson to all the positives, like the Upfronts held last month, and negatives, like Kyle and Jackie O‘s woes in Melbourne and the axing of breakfast teams KIIS 97.3 Brisbane and Mix 102.3 Adelaide.

At SCA, 2Day FM Content Director Ryan Tothill has also been made redundant, in the same month Grant Tothill shared he will be stepping down from his role as Executive Head, LiSTNR Operations and Audience at SCA, but will remain as a part time consultant.

What an absolute cluster ****… I feel for the people who have been made scapegoats of horrifically irresponsible “management”.

The C-Suites are killing radio and the soul of what it once stood for… and it’s the talented people who dedicate and often times sacrifice so much to building great content.

It’s extremely disheartening to watch.

And yet ARN staff haven’t been told yet. None of us have been told anything.

What on earth was LJ meant to do here? Inherited a $200,000,000 bomb, made the ‘no duh’ call to put OC to Sydney and JAM to drive, inherited a disaster decision for Mix and 973 (both already aligned to KIIS marketing), just ripped off the bandaid for it, put in the best choice show to ADL to fit the KIIS brand with a good chance they compete for National Drive in a couple of years time. For me, the only ‘what the’ moment was Craig Low into Brisbane… I would imagine that Rob, Kip and Corey was looking at a multi year extension, and ARN couldn’t commit to them having a show in ’27. Low becomes the cheapo option (probably on 150k to do a metro show instead of the million dollar-or-so option already there). Smallsy was probably already decided on by Duncan, so what could she do?

She’s had a real rough rub of the green here. Put her on the sinking ship and get rid of her before she’s had any real chance to patch the walls

Many of us as former ARN staff whose positions were made redundant would have received notice of their death sentence from Ms Joyce. So it is with a certain amount of irony and schadenfreude that we read of this news. If you’re gonna swing the axe, be careful you’re not standing within range!

Poor LJ

To think that the Radio Game Changers crew believe their interview with LJ was the catalyst for this redundancy is comedy gold. Nothing like ex radio powerbrokers clinging to the fantasy that they still move the industry’s needle.
