John Paul Melhem: “Everyone’s story is special and worth sharing”

Reporter

Even in his wildest dreams, John Paul Melhem hadn’t expected that one day he’d be hosting his own podcast.

But two years and 99 shows later, the Talk All Things with JP podcast is fast approaching a milestone, with the 100th episode set to drop on August 10.

JP – who grew up in Melbourne – was born with a disability called Bardet-Biedl Syndrome.

At the age of four, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Then, in 2009, JP was diagnosed as legally blind with tunnel vision.

JP has long been passionate about working in radio, and getting involved with the RadioVoice program would change his life in the most extraordinary way.

He tells Radio Today “I was working with Cindy, the owner of Umbrella Support, who was teaching me the basics of radio, and in 2021, I was introduced to Daz, the owner of RadioVoice, who spent some time with me chatting about how to write radio ads.”

Shortly after, JP was invited to be one of the first students in the RadioVoice Skills Building Program.

“I have been with Daz for now over two years, learning all the basics of radio and podcasting, along with life skills such as communication, confidence and resilience.”

JP’s sessions at the RadioVoice studio are the highlight of his week.

He says the Talk All Things with JP podcast is all about people sharing their stories.

“I’ve had the privilege of chatting with a lot of guests from different walks of life – people in the media, business owners, artists, sports trainers, and recently, a Hollywood actor direct from LA!”

Now, he’s counting down the days until his 100th show.

“I feel very proud – and amazed – to reach this many episodes.”

“I honestly didn’t believe I would make it this far.”

JP continues to meet every challenge life serves up.

During the past two years, his vision has progressively worsened. As a result, both JP and Daz – as his producer – have had to adapt.

“Where I had previously written down guest questions, I now have to use my memory and rehearse the conversation in my head prior to contacting my guests each episode.”

JP is thankful to those who’ve helped him navigate the world of broadcasting.

“A huge shout out to all my special guests who have supported me on my journey, and to Daz, who has guided me along the way.”

JP Says RadioVoice has given him to the confidence to challenge himself.

“It has taught me the value of listening, and to understand everyone’s story is special and worth sharing.”

As for the future, JP plans to study for qualifications in media or journalism, and eventually secure a job in radio.

“And of course, with 100 podcast episodes almost achieved, I’ll be aiming for show 200!”
