Inside 2Day FM’s major playlist overhaul

2Day FM’s younger format and ‘new music forward’ approach promises ‘The hits, before they hit.’

The format modifications officially started in March, but were developing even before that. How are they going?

Peter Tuskan from RCS Media Monitors has analysed the station’s playlist and finds there are some significant changes taking place.

The data tells a clear story.

The format shift began in December 2024, when the station’s local content unexpectedly jumped to 21.84% (6am–12am), up from just 12.44% the month before. That momentum continued into the new year, with Australian music averaging 24.75% across the first half of 2025, peaking at 27.52% in April.

Homegrown hits like CYRIL & maryjo’s ‘Still Into You’, Sonny Fodera & Clementine Douglas’ ‘Tell Me’, and Tobiahs’ ‘Angel Of Mine’ lead the way.

Notably, 35.79% of the Aussie music aired since the rebrand has come from fully independent acts or artists signed to indie labels — outpacing the share of all three major labels.

It’s not just more local music — 2Day FM is playing more music overall. Since the start of the year, overall spins are up for each month in comparison to the same period last year.

I must be missing something..
Under 20% for their format means they’ve missed their Aus Music quota 3 months in a row? (Sep, Oct & Nov)
Can someone clarify this data?

2Day should be celebrated for their guts in trying something different and championing Australian independent labels! Their lack of it in the past contributed to many criticisms but they’re giving a go with nothing to lose.

Congratulations to those involved and hope SCA sticks with it for the long haul.

Interesting comparing 2DayFM 2024 vs 2025 but how does it compare against Nova, KIIS and even triple j? Are 2DayFM playing more Australian music now against the competition? Am loving the 2Day format refresh – I’ve always believed that you can’t have a station called ‘2Day’ when you’re playing music from yesterday.

Nah they wouldn’t have, they have gone based on surveyed times of 6am-midnight. They will have done what most groups do by stuffing Australian music between midnight and 5am with little listenership. ARN does is with iHeart Australia, SCA with Homegrown, ‘Maddy Rowe Aus Music’ on Nova.

Stack the deck to keep the authorities at bay

Love the 2DayFM log too which is clearly influencing the rest of the Hit Network! Reminds me of the early days of Nova which was sitting between Triple J and the old Today Network.

I’ve got a feeling that 2Day is trying to be the old The Edge (now Cada).

Triple M tried a similar format years ago with virtually all new music a bit like triple j it failed miserably. I think Barry Chapman was Pd at the time

@anon

Aus music quota is taken & reported between 6am till midnight. Midnights to dawn don’t count in percentage for the month these days.
