Grant Denyer opens up about addiction recovery on Nova’s Jase & Lauren

This morning on Nova 100’s Jase & Lauren, the team chatted to TV’s Grant Denyer, who revealed raw and powerful details about his personal challenges during addiction recovery.

“I was struggling in the recovery of the broken back, and I had an addiction to the pain medication. And it’s something that no one warns you about, like you go to hospital, you get an injury, they’ll treat it, they’ll send you out with a bunch of prescriptions, and no one will sit you down and go, hey, this could be the road to hell.”

Recalling his lowest moment, Grant said “For some reason that night, I wanted scotch. I was living in an apartment in the CBD. I left in the middle of night just in my undies, walking around, no clothes on, just undies, for scotch, in a delirium, and then I got lost, and then my wife’s looking for me for three hours, like, just where the hell is he? Where’s he gone? And I could barely walk right, like freshly broken back, and I’d got lost in the building.

“She found me three hours later in the fire escape, asleep on the ground, just curled up in the corner, just stuck and lost next to someone else’s poo, like it was just someone had taken a dump in in the fire escape, and here I am asleep on the on the ground, in my undies, lost … and I just try and remember, I try and remember that if I ever think I’m slipping.”

Jase & Lauren can be heard from 6am to 9am on Nova 100 in Melbourne. Listeners can stream the show live or catch up with the daily podcast by downloading the Nova Player.
