Gareth Parker leaving 6PR for 9News Perth

6PR’s Breakfast host Gareth Parker has announced he will be starting a new role as 9News Perth’s Director of News.

Sharing the news this morning on 6PR, Parker said it is a “huge opportunity” and he can’t wait to “get stuck into it.”

Parker carries over his trove of experience that includes Breakfast host at 6PR, columnist for WAtoday, and previous host of 6PR’s Morning Show.

Previously spending 13 years as a reporter for The West Australian, Parker will be right at home in the new role, but that doesn’t mean he won’t miss 6PR.

“I am going to miss the 6PR listeners terribly and it has been a great privilege to sit behind the mic for the past six years,” said Parker.

“I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to lead such a talented and hungry team at 9News Perth as we bring the people of WA the stories that matter in news bulletins they trust.”

Parker boasts awards like the Matt Price Prize for WA Columnist of the Year, WA Journalist of the Year at the 2021 WA Media Awards, and a nomination for a Walkley Award.

9Network Director of News and Current Affairs, Darren Wick, welcomes Gareth with open arms.

“Gareth is an outstanding journalist with a track record of breaking major stories,” said Mr Wick.

“He is committed to getting to the heart of issues that matter for West Australians. We have a great team at 9News that will flourish under his leadership.”

Parker’s replacement on 6PR Breakfast is yet to be announced.

He will begin his new role in the coming months.

So a spot opens up on 6PR for a new presenter to join the boys club of Liam, Steve, Oliver, Karl, Mark, Tod, Jon, Fred, Simon, Tony and Brad… I wonder who’ll get it…

Of course the suits over east will never admit they cocked up by getting rid of Millsy & Baz – a heritage show in a fiercely parochial market.

Perhaps they’ll sign Liam – only for him to pull out again when something better comes along?
