End of an era: Paul Makin hosts his final show on 101.5 Douglas FM

It’s the end of a radio era, with Paul Makin hosting his final on-air shift at Queensland community station 101.5 Douglas FM.

The popular host of Makin in the Morning, Makin has been a well-known and reassuring voice in the Port Douglas community since 2018, first with Fab FM and then as a dedicated volunteer with Douglas FM.

Makin says his departure is tinged with sadness. “I love this station. I can remember as a seven year old (being) in my bedroom in Sydney, with a tape recorder, reading ads out of the newspaper, doing a radio show for my mum. She was a good critic, too.”

“Now, at the age of 76, I’m hanging up the headphones and packing the mic away.”

Paul’s career spans an incredible 61 years in radio, television, and print, playing a crucial role in keeping the local community informed and connected.

Covering the devastation of Cyclone Jasper stands out as a particular memory, in which a very sleep-deprived Makin was at the station virtually non-stop, getting vital messages out to people in the Douglas Shire.

Makin carved himself a successful career in journalism over the decades, and as a TV host with the Seven Network in Adelaide.

In a Facebook post this morning, the team at Douglas FM paid tribute:

“Thank you, Paul, for your invaluable service. Now, it’s time to explore our wonderful country and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation with your wife, Marion.”
