Q&A with Courtney Carthy: What next for podcasting?

Mushroom Group’s creative director of podcasts, Courtney Carthy, may have been a surprise addition on Radio Today’s Podcast Power Players listhowever the number of high-powered audio executives putting him forward for inclusion meant he simply couldn’t be ignored. In this quick-fire Q&A with Vivienne Kelly he talks stress, podcasting mistakes and what’s next. 


VK: Describe your job in one word:

CC: Diverse.

VK: If you could make a podcast about anything, what would it be?

CC: A tag-along adventure.

VK: What is the biggest mistake you see in podcasting?

CC: Thinking that phone interview audio quality is ok. I’m guilty.

VK: What’s your prediction for where the  industry will be in five years?

CC: More exclusive platforms, but hopefully getting more money to more creators.

VK: What advice would you give to somebody looking to work in podcasting?

CC: Be great at editing audio and don’t work for free.

VK: What is the best part of your role?

CC: Feeling like we’re just at the start.

VK: What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?

CC: Wrangling people from everywhere!

VK: What about the wider industry, what challenges is it facing?

CC: Getting money to creators and show discovery.

VK: What’s something about you that might surprise people?

CC: If I’m stressed out I watch skateboarding videos on Instagram.

VK: If you weren’t in podcasting, what do you think you’d be doing?

CC: Something else in media. I can’t escape it.
