Changes afoot inside Nova’s Melbourne newsroom

Staff Writer

The newsroom merry-go-round is spinning again and this time it’s landed on NOVA Entertainment in Melbourne.

It’s been a fairly active two months for the busy newsroom, especially on the Nova 100 side of the fence.

Matt Smithson has left the network after over nine years; more than five of those in the Melbourne newsroom.

Smithson has given up early morning starts for a media and communications role with the City of Melbourne.

Filling the breakfast chair is former 3AW journalist Ashleigh Gardner. She had originally been lured over to ‘do drive’ on Nova 100.

That position has now been filled by James Royce.

The former SEN news director is coming back to Melbourne after a stint with Southern Cross Austereo on the Gold Coast.

Ashleigh has been with the company on drive for all of a few months and is now elevated to breakfast reader. Hard to keep up. I am surprised with Matt’s decision as he is well respected. Outstanding journo leaving the industry for PR.
