ARIA-nominated composer releases soundtrack from Let’s Talk About Sects
Australian ARIA-nominated music composer and performer Joe Gould has released his bespoke original soundtrack composed for the independent Australian podcast, Let’s Talk About Sects.
Sarah Steel’s Let’s Talk About Sects provides a deep dive into one cult per episode, with Gould composing a suite of themes for each.
“Nobody joins a cult. You join a self-help group, a religious movement, a political organisation. They change so gradually, by the time you realise you’re trapped – and almost everybody does – you can’t figure a safe way back out,” said Deborah Layton, survivor of Jim Jones’ Peoples Temple cult.
Usually dispersed as a score throughout the episode for Nobody Joins a Cult, Gould regroups the themes into standalone tracks, resulting in an album of percussion-based post-rock.
Many instruments are utilised by Gould for the tracks with the aim of adding darkness appropriate to the podcast’s subject matter.
Nobody Joins a Cult is available here and on Spotify here.
