ABC Radio Hobart rugs up Tassie

ABC Radio Hobart’s Rug Up Tassie initiative has been hailed a huge success.

On April 29, the station launched its long-running winter appeal for 2024, supporting Tasmanians with limited access to shelter and heating as we head into the cooler months.

Knitting needles across Tasmania went into overdrive, with people making and donating over 6000 knitted squares.

These squares will be made into blankets and distributed to those in need this winter.

ABC Radio Hobart Manager Samantha Stayner says “Local radio is so much more than just words – it’s powerful because it connects people and, at its best, it builds stronger communities. Sometimes, it simply helps keep people warm in winter.”

“These blankets will bring such warmth and comfort to people doing it tough across Tasmania. It’s incredible to see the time and creativity that’s gone into creating these squares and blankets, they’re made with love and it’s a beautiful thing to be able to share that with our community”.

The blankets are distributed by Rug Up Tassie’s charity partners including The Salvation Army, Hobart City Mission, St Vincent de Paul Society and Tassie Mums.

Rug Up Tassie will continue to create blankets from knitted squares, and work with charity partners to distribute these over winter.
