Tom Malone reinstates 3AW station manager Stephen Beers
Move over, Russell Tate! Just three weeks after showing Stephen Beers the door, the incoming boss of Nine’s radio assets has backflipped.
Beers will return to Macquarie Media’s headquarters in Melbourne as station manager, according to a statement from Nine today.
Beers had been in operations with Macquarie Media since 2015 and was the latest executive to make a swift exit amid the now complete takeover by Nine Entertainment.
It’s the first big and public move by the new managing director, Tom Malone, following a very turbulent time for Australia’s biggest commercial AM talk network.
“I’m delighted to announce that Stephen Beers is returning to 3AW as Station Manager – Melbourne,” said Malone. “Stephen has generously agreed to contract back to Macquarie Radio as we transition our business into the new Nine.
“I have taken this decision because even in my first week I see what an important contribution Stephen has made to the success of 3AW in this city and for this community and we need his wisdom and support as we move forward together.
Malone added that he has personally known Beers for 20 years and will work closely with him to “evolve the sound” of 3AW and 1278.
“While I know you will be happy with Stephen’s return, this does not alter the challenge ahead of us,” confirmed Malone.
“We must all strive to deliver great local content, while keeping a close eye on costs to ensure the health of our business and its contribution to the broader business.
“That is my challenge to you and Stephen as we move into 2020.”
