2TM gears up for 53rd Tamworth Country Music Festival

Reporter

The Tamworth Country Music Festival is now in its 53rd year, and local radio station 2TM will again be front and centre when the big event gets underway this week.

2TM began The Tamworth Country Music Festival back in 1973, and has been firmly rooted in the annual proceedings ever since.

The 2TM broadcast team of Sharnae Birkett, Dan Saunders and Jon Wolfe will host live on-air interviews every half hour with over 160 artists in the 2TM studios over the ten days of the festival.

Listeners can tune into 1287 on the AM dial and listen to artists chat about their careers and hear acoustic versions of their greatest hits live in the studio.

Saturday January 25 sees the 2TM Discovered finalist concert being held on the JB Hi-Fi stage at Centrepoint Tamworth.

2TM’s coverage will culminate with Sharnae, Dan and Jon reporting on the red carpet and broadcasting live from the CMAA Toyota Golden Guitar Awards.

The 2TM Street Team will be out and about as well, emceeing shows including Toyota Fanzone in the main street, the CMAA Senior Academy Concert, The Riverside Camp Grounds, The Pub’s Charity Concert for Ronald McDonald House, The Remembering Reg Lindsay Concert, The Melissa Bajric Concert and Moonshiners, to name just a few.

You can also check out the Live Lounge interviews on 92.9’s YouTube channel.

As the founding fathers of the Tamworth Country Music Festival are about to be honoured (Northern Daily Leader, 13 Jan 2025), for the historical record can we note that 2TM in 2025 has no permanent nightly Country Music presence on air nor across former Hoedown/Country Music Radio Network stations in the Super Radio Network.
It’s one thing to dress up and do OB’s during the festival but where is the commitment to 2TM’s heritage?
It would be like WSM Nashville saying ‘We are the home of Country Music’ and only doing the Opry on Saturday night – reality is I can tune in to WSM online every night and hear Country Music.
The key difference – limited Australian Country Music – at least WSM play Keith Urban and occasionally Morgan Evans – but, 2TM should still be the standard bearer for the Australian industry.
Formats and programming may change but commitment to your station’s heritage really should be sacrosanct.
