Triple M’s Nick Riewoldt intervenes after fan throws phone at country star Riley Green
Former AFL champion and radio host Nick Riewoldt has revealed on Triple M’s Mick in the Morning that he stepped in to help security after a concertgoer threw a phone at US country star Riley Green during his Melbourne show on the weekend.
In a discussion with co-hosts Mick Molloy, Rosie Walton and Titus O’Reilly this morning, Riewoldt detailed the chaotic moment at Margaret Court Arena when a fan launched a phone at the performer during the final songs of the night, striking him and drawing blood.
Riewoldt said the incident unfolded directly in front of him on the general admission floor after he had earlier noticed the man behaving erratically.
The rogue concertgoer allegedly lobbed the phone from around 10–15 metres away, hitting Green on the side of the head.
Riewoldt said he immediately grabbed the man and pointed him out to security, who removed him within seconds.
Videos of the incident have gone viral online and prompted headlines after several incidents at Melbourne concerts over the past 18 months.
Riewoldt said “I saw this happen; it unfolded right in front of me. We wanted to be as close to the stage as possible. I pegged this bloke early on – the bloke who has eventually thrown his phone – as being a real wanker. He was a loose cannon, he was real ‘big energy’ vibes. The sort of bloke that comes over asks you for a photo, you pose for him, and then he starts heaping shit on you afterwards … he did this to me. He was filming [me] during the concert …”
Mick: “Filming you without your permission or approval?”
Riewoldt: “Yeah and just saying some pretty ordinary stuff. It was a bit inappropriate and weird. Eventually, the second to last song finishes and out of nowhere he has launched – like he was trying to throw the stumps down from mid-wicket – his phone at Riley Green and hit in in the head.”
