The Coodabeens’ big bang theory

Ian Cover says there have been many highlights over his journey with one of Australia’s most enduring radio teams, the Coodabeen Champions.

I spoke to Ian recently on the Food Bytes podcast, where he reflected on their days at the ABC:

“One of the great opportunities we were provided by the national broadcaster was to do our show from every state or territory in Australia, and every capital, and places in between. That was a rare privilege.”

But a particular memory stands out – making radio history in Hobart one New Year’s Eve.

“I think we pioneered something on radio – we called the midnight fireworks. I don’t think fireworks had ever been called on radio before. It went something like ‘There’s a red one! There’s a yellow one! Oh, there’s a big white one!”

Since their program first aired on 3RRR back in 1981, the Coodabeens have become a household name.

They can now be heard on ACE Radio’s 3MP in Melbourne and ACE’s network of stations throughout regional Victoria.
