New name, new location: South Coast FM officially opens new studios

Today marks a new chapter in the history of Victorian community radio station South Coast FM.

After 35 years of broadcasting in seaside Inverloch, this afternoon sees the official opening of its new studios  in nearby Wonthaggi.

After changing its name from 3mFM to South Coast FM earlier this year, the station recently relocated to its new home at the rear of the Bass Coast Adult Learning campus.

South Coast FM had its humble beginnings in 1984, broadcasting from a disused dairy on top of Mount Misery, near Outtrim.

The station says that on a summer’s day, Mount Misery was quite spectacular with its views, but come the cold South Gippsland winters, the site really lived up to its name.

“Presenters faced an immediate challenge as they wound their way up the narrow dirt track in the dark to reach the station studio, having to play dodgems with the cows and many times the presenters got bogged in the parking area.”

Later – well known Inverloch chemist and jazz loving radio enthusiast Max Annand offered studio space above his shop and the station moved house.

Today South Coast FM broadcasts 24/7 on 88.1 with special services to Foster and Yarram on 89.5 and Phillip Island and San Remo on 89.1 Mhz and streams online.
