Mentor, visionary and radio pioneer: RIP Sir Frank Moore

Australian radio is today mourning another great loss, following the death this week of Sir Frank Moore OAM, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 93.

During radio’s halcyon days from the early sixties through to the early eighties, Sir Frank was a highly regarded and prominent broadcast visionary, building the Color Radio Network from the ground up, taking it from humble beginnings to Australian radio powerhouse.

Veteran broadcaster Kevin Hillier – who got his start in radio at 4IP thanks to Sir Frank – says “Except for right now, saying or hearing his name has always made me smile.”

“Sir Frank gave so many young radio people their start in the industry and he took a keen interest in our progress and development.”

“He enjoyed our success as much as we did and he did so much to help and foster the staff.  He was revered and rightly so. A visionary, a shrewd businessman, but for so many of us he was someone we loved … though back in the day that would have seemed over the top.”

“I have never worked for or met anyone like him.”

Sir Frank encouraged, influenced and mentored a multitude of radio people on basic life skills and the importance of being a team player.

Sir Frank was also known as the ‘father of tourism’ in Queensland, heading up a state government inquiry that led to the establishment of the Queensland Tourist and Travel Corporation which he chaired until 1990.

His legacy will live on.
