Podcaster & former triple j host Matt Okine to release new EP

Former Editor & Content Director

Matt Okine, a former triple j Breakfast host and current co-host of LiSTNR’s Matt & Alex All Day Breakfast, has new music coming out this week.

The EP, 2021, comes out on Friday and marks the re-emergence of Okine’s music side-project, Boilermakers.

The first single, ‘Blame Me’, is available now.

Okine said the track is a “straight-up flex”.

“I wanted to be bold with it – in-your-face, tongue-in-cheek. An opportunity to show people that between making TV shows, doing radio, writing books, and making kids’ music, I can do this rap thing seriously,” he said.

He said the accompanying video was conceived organically and had ended up exactly how he’d first imagined it.

“There isn’t a narrative to this clip because there doesn’t need to be. The narrative is – I’m back releasing music, I’m having fun doing it, and there’s more on the way,” he added.

The EP will tackle toxic masculinity racism, self-doubt, relationship breakdowns and hitting rock bottom.

Okine said he will always make music.

“It’s not necessarily the focus of my career, but I love doing it, and I like creating things and offering them to anyone who wants to enjoy it. It won’t be for everyone, but it’s a part of who I am, and it always captures what’s happening for me under the surface. It’s something that I can create that doesn’t have to be funny… just real. I think the true fans of what I do will always learn more about me through the lyrics, and everyone else can enjoy it because I’ve worked with two awesome producers who make sick beats,” he added.

Okine also has a children’s music project, Diver City, alongside KLP. The duo’s project was nominated for Best Children’s Album at the 2020 ARIAs.
