Laurel, Gary and Mark to depart as 4BC Breakfast takes new direction

Reporter

Brisbane’s 4BC has announced it will be taking on a new direction in the Breakfast timeslot, as Laurel Edwards, Gary Clare and Mark Hine prepare to bid farewell.

Head of Content for Nine Radio Greg Byrnes says “Laurel, Gary and Mark have played a crucial role in our live and local content strategy. It’s been a privilege to have them engage with Brisbane through 4BC but we’ve decided to take a new approach to Breakfast.”

“Their loyal listeners, and all of us at 4BC, will miss them greatly, but we’ll be sending them off in a style worthy of their remarkable careers.”

Laurel, Gary and Mark will take their planned survey break next week and return on Monday, September 23, for a final week together as they reflect on their most memorable moments and farewell their 4BC listeners.

Their final day on air will be Friday, September 27.

An announcement on the 4BC Breakfast lineup for the remainder of 2024 will be made soon.

A station giving a breakfast show notice and allowing them to wrap up over several weeks? I’m floored. Many could learn from this.

Looks like I’m looking for another radio station to listen to in the morning, it is sad to see them go. They made the day start with a laugh and great music.

No major surprise. I suspect this decision had actually been a while in the making, possibly since Brent James was made redundant back in March/April.

Nine Radio’s “new direction” for 4BC breakfast will most likely, be the return of a newstalk-based program in-line with the rest of the station.

As for Laurel, Gary & Mark: It’d be nice if they resurfaced on 4BH (a station considerably better suited to their style of brekky show than 4BC) but with BBQ Bob doing good business, why would ACE Radio try harder?

Meanwhile, three out of Brisbane’s four commercial FM stations seem happy to not bother catering to a significant adult-oriented music market. I don’t get it.

Now sure, market dynamics are a bit different than they are in Sydney & Melbourne who have more commercial stations on both the AM & FM bands. But even so, one would’ve thought there’d be room for a Smooth or Pure Gold type station on the FM band in Brisbane. Perhaps an idea for 97.3, who aren’t doing particularly hot as a KIIS.

Always makes me laugh when I hear a radio big wig say”weve decided to take a new approach” what they actually mean is the ratings were so bad we had to get rid of them and we made a big mistake ever giving them a job !!!

To say I’m devastated is an understatement as a long time listener of 30plus years I guess I will no longer need a radio, unless they move on to a more deserving station. There are certainly no other breakfast teams I could be bothered listening to . Time will tell as the ratings fall.

Surely the measure of a leader is how much respect you afford to the people who have been displaced by your decision. Well done Greg, let’s hope this becomes the standard.

Congratulations to Laurel, Gary and Mark for your success across your career.

They were loved and when another station gave them the flick 9 picked them out…. A bit unfair but my guess is paying 3 hosts they are paying more money??? Maybe there will be a single host or something…. Won’t last though I think feels like they may get more sydney radio again???

River 949 could do with a “smooth” format change and a well-known breakfast team… just saying.

I only tuned in to 4BC for Laurel, Gary & Mark. As soon as their breakfast show finished, I changed stations. Looks like I’m looking for a new station for breakfast as well.
