How do we make our interview stand out from the pack?

With so many radio shows getting to interview the same stars and guests these days, you must be asking this question every time.

You may have a team who work best discussing possible questions and angles, or perhaps your show members prefer to surprise each other and roll through interviews with more of an improv style.

Whatever the case, most interviews across the dial end up sounding pretty similar, unless you think outside the square!

Some big name stars prefer a straight forward conversational chat. John Cleese is a recent example of a guest on our show (Clairsy, Matt & Kymba – MIX 94.5 Perth) who confessed off air that he was relieved we didn’t have a series of stunts or wacky ideas for his approval. We ended up just chatting with him and after half an hour admitted he didn’t want to leave.

Other guests are open to more fun and this is where your entire team’s creativity can come to the fore.

Last year when Hugh Jackman was doing the rounds in support of the movie Pan, we decided to do something different that didn’t require his pre approval. Knowing he was a cricket tragic, we got in touch with local legend Justin Langer and surprised Hugh with JL on the other line mid interview!

You can hear in the attached audio the mutual admiration between the two and the listeners got a pair of celebrities in a rare kind of catch up!

Always keep thinking as a team! And make YOUR interviews unique and compelling!
