Christian O’Connell officially becomes an Australian citizen

Five years after arriving in Melbourne from the UK to take the reins of Gold 104.3’s Breakfast show, Christian O’Connell is now officially a true blue Aussie.

O’Connell became an Australian citizen during a ceremony at Brighton Town Hall last night, along with his wife Sarah and daughters Ruby and Lois.

O’Connell tells the Herald Sun his whole family feels honoured:

“We love our adopted country and are proud to be part of it.”

O’Connell says he’s fallen in love with Aussie mateship.

“The real attraction is you guys. You are friendly, positive and love a laugh. It has changed us since moving here five years ago.”

“I came here and stumbled on the radio as a complete unknown and outsider and, after some initial trepidation, you were kind enough to give me a go.”

But his allegiance hasn’t changed completely.

O’Connell says he’ll still be supporting England in The Ashes.

He reserves the right to review that, should England start losing.
