ABC Perth’s Geoff Hutchison leaving Drive in November

Geoff Hutchison of ABC Radio Perth’s Drive shift has announced he will be taking a break from radio to think and travel.

“This is not retirement, it’s just time away – to talk a little less and think a little more. To travel and explore a world beyond the studio that has long been my home,” Hutchison said.

Finishing up at the end of the year, Hutchison has hosted the Drive slot for the past five years and worked at ABC Perth for the past 15.

Highlighting he has plans to return to radio in the future, Geoff said he needed to create the space for other endeavours in the meantime.

“It’s about reclaiming time and not being driven by the sweep of the second hand, because you do become a bit of a prisoner to it,” Geoff said.

“Every day, I tip a bucket of news into my head, process it and then at the end of the day, hopefully, empty it out, so there’s more room tomorrow to do another version of the same thing.

“I want to clear that space to do and learn some other things.”

Geoff has been a journalist and broadcaster for over 40 years. He joined the ABC as a reporter in 1998 on the 7:30 Report before spending some time as the Europe correspondent then returning home.

“To be invited to tell people’s stories; to contextualise the news and to be the conduit of important public conversations has been a privilege indeed,” Hutchison said.

Geoff’s final show will be on November 29th.
