Radio Today’s top 10 most influential content directors in Australian metro FM radio is out this week

Staff Writer

Radio Today is gearing up to release the latest edition of its top 10 most influential content directors in Australian metro FM radio.

The content director or program director’s role is arguably the most important position in competitive markets.

ARN national content director Duncan Campbell says a great station CD is “a leader who has a strategy and a vision to deliver results and has the ability to get a team to buy into that vision.”

They require “a solid knowledge of both the science and the art of programming and an understanding of the digital landscape and the potential those platforms offer.”

SCA’s Guy Dobson has a slightly different criteria. “Hair optional. A nice set of teeth and must look good in a station polo,” he says.

“Apart from that, we look for people who aren’t afraid to have the tough conversations, believe in the medium and have the ability to recognise good radio from bad. A good set of ears in other words.”

Radio Today has compiled an new list for 2018, taking into account the overall influence of a radio station, ratings, talent choice, talent management and direction, music influence, experience, market size, competitive landscape, group/network input and the scale of their position.

The list is split across several networks, with four faces from SCA, three from NOVA Entertainment and three from ARN making up the top 10. This year also sees a new face take top spot for the first time.

Stay tuned this Thursday May 31.

The CD’s role has shrunk to be basically an admin job now. Any decisions are made by network or Group CD’s Thats the way it is. All the power is now in very few hands.
