Q&A with Jennifer Goggin: The future of audio is adventurous and interactive

Former Editor & Content Director

Head of content for LiSTNR Original Podcasts Jennifer Goggin sees a future of interactivity and adventurous audio, but here and now, she’s still struggling to stay on top of her email inbox. Here, the Podcast Power Player chats to Vivienne Kelly about the best and worst parts of her role, her own podcast plans and how to get noticed in the industry.

VK: Describe your job in one word:

JG: Dynamic

VK: If you could make a podcast about anything, what would it be?

JG: I’m actually in the process of producing it right now, but what that content is will have to stay secret for a few more months.

VK: What is the biggest mistake you see in podcasting?

JG: People mistaking a recorded chat for engaging podcast content.

VK: What’s your prediction for where the industry will be in five years?

JG: Booming and full of adventurous audio production with interactive extensions to bring the content to life outside of the listening experience.

VK: What advice would you give to somebody looking to work in podcasting?

JG: Produce an audio showreel that showcases your production abilities when working with a host as well as your own hosting abilities. Very few people are hiring podcast hosts, but plenty are looking for podcast producers.

VK: What is the best part of your role?

JG: Developing new podcast ideas with passionate hosts and creative producers.

VK: What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?

JG: Getting through my emails.

VK: What about the wider industry, what challenges is it facing?

JG: Understanding the difference between ‘downloads’ and ‘audience’.

VK: What’s something about you that might surprise people?

JG: I was educated entirely in the Irish language, ‘Gaeilge,’ as opposed to English.

VK: If you weren’t in podcasting, what do you think you’d be doing?

JG: I’d probably still be producing radio documentaries and audio features. Audio storytelling is the only thing I could ever see myself doing.
