2DayFM confirms final Hughesy, Ed & Erin Breakfast show

Reporter

Sydney’s 104.1 2DayFM has confirmed that the Hughesy, Ed & Erin Breakfast show has ended.

Hughsey, Ed and Erin said “We’ve loved our time together on 2DayFM Breakfast, however, due to some of our families living in different cities we are unable to commit to 2025, so with a heavy heart we are moving aside so 2DayFM can find the team to take them forward in Breakfast.”

“We are so grateful to Sydney for their support, and to double the number of listeners in three years is something we are immensely proud of, and we will miss each and every one of them.”

SCA paid tribute to Dave Hughes, Erin Molan and Ed Kavalee for their efforts over the past three and a half years.

SCA Chief Content Officer Dave Cameron said “We are incredibly thankful to Hughesy, Ed and Erin for their unwavering dedication in making the 2DayFM Breakfast show a fun way to wake up Sydney each morning since 2020.”

“As we look to 2025, we are preparing for a change for the 2DayFM Sydney Breakfast show and will make further announcements in due course.”

For the remainder of 2024, the Hit Network’s Jimmy Smith and Nath Roye from The Jimmy & Nath Show on the Hit national Nights shift will temporarily move into the Breakfast timeslot.

Further details regarding the 2DayFM Sydney Breakfast show for 2025 will be announced in due course.

I wonder if they got moved on because they were trialling Mike E and Emma in the morning slot. When they do that something got to change about the line up.

Seriously! Who is running 2Day? Rebranding is needed…

So why can’t SCA just come out and tell the truth – the show has been very expensive and a complete failure

A million dollar crew show that didnt rate well

About time they gave a regional team a crack instead of shuffling the deck.

Thank god this expensive exercise has finally come to an end, it has been almost 4 years of a sub-5 share and quite possibly the least profitable breakfast show in the country.

Hughesy needs to be on Triple M, that format is made for him and there’s an open spot for him in Melbourne as well.

2day needs to be blown up and rebuilt, it doesn’t know who it is anymore

Never found Hughsey or Ed Kavalee that funny as comicians. It had doomed on it from the beginning.

2day FM – the modern day 2SM.
The failures are not the fault of the announcer talent – but a result of years of poor programming and governance from the moment they let K&J walk to the constant embarrassing decisions made.

Thankfully they don’t care enough about Brisbane and B105 to have influence and make poor decisions there.

It begins.

Mike E & Emma in to 2Day breakfast for a quarter of the price.

Hughesy into MMM breakfast to be networked into Sydney, Melbourne and the regional M’s.

No Triple M & AFL deal will see less footy chat. Rush Hours’ become just that an hour after Marty Sheargold & co goes into network drive.

2Day FM needs to look at their playlist(zzz) as well as their on air talent. We always have WSFM & Smooth that play music from the past.

If 2DayFM had only been struggling for a year or two, you could totally understand them trying to get a legacy brand to work again.

But after more than a decade of being the least (or second least, ahead of sister station Triple M) listened to Sydney commercial FM station, surely the time has come for SCA to relaunch 104.1 Sydney as a completely new station? New name, logo, presenters, music format…the lot.

Think back to when 95.3 was relaunched as Smooth or 106.5 was relaunched as KIIS, and the massive buzz those changeovers generated around radio in Sydney. Maybe it’d take some time for a totally relaunched 104.1 Sydney to properly gain traction in the marketplace (just as it took about three years for Smooth to get its first #1 FM survey), but it’s not as if the current incarnation of 2DayFM is setting new rating records in any timeslot!

Along with shaking up the on-air team, I think 104.1 Sydney really needs some new people behind the scenes as well. You know there are major problems with how 2DayFM is currently operated when WSFM seems to have a fresher BTS team compared to what has traditionally been a younger skewing music station!

@SydneyCityTV
I agree, but unfortunately probably logo will stay the same as they re part of HIT Network….for sure new name … New2DayFM it’s not new name. they should stick with old “hits and oldskool” theme…rebrand maybe to Hit Sydney or Hits Sydney…. It looks like they want to focus on 90s00s hits, the same like WSFM on 80s….

Three years on air is a pretty solid effort by 2DayFM / SCA standards. You can’t say they weren’t given a proper go at the slot, and doubling 2DayFm’s breakfast share is no mean feat (though they were starting from a very low base).

How long do we think before the announcement from SCA that Hughesy (and Kate?) are on Triple M Melbourne Breakfast in 2025?

Also, surely Mike E and Emma for 2DayFM Breakfast 2025? It has to be a team that’s known in Sydney for being Sydney. SCA have tried using nationally known talent from Melbourne for the best part of a decade now with barely any success.

If they were smart they’d let Jimmy and Nath have a crack at it for at least 2 years.

SCA Insider
9 Aug 2024 - 9:56 am

Here’s what will happen: Jimmy and Nath will fill the slot, and it will shortly be announced this is an indefinite position. SCA will fill their old slot with a “best of Jimmy and Nath”, so they won’t need to fill the slot with another show.

Eventually John Kelly will host a 9-12 morning shift that will be networked to every station and time in the country, at which point Alphabucks will be the main currency of the land.

@SCA Insider

You could not be more wrong. It will actually be an AI of John Kelly’s voice on the networked shift, not JK himself.

I reakon while they at it, they should make the regional day time announcers be the local breakfast announcers. So every hit station can have they own local breakfast show again.

SydneyCityTV

@Hkn Well, it’s not as if the current Hit Network logo design (or overall visual branding) is anything spectacular.

“The New 104.1 2DayFM” is really a positioner that has been used on and off for decades in various guises, as well.

As others have said, credit where it’s due for SCA at least living up to the “we’ll give Hughesy, Ed & Erin at least two years to prove themselves” promise made back in 2020/21 that everyone (including myself) thought they wouldn’t keep. But with ratings having not gone up to an acceptable enough level and following a recent decline, the right decision has probably been made to move on.

Of course, I agree with anyone suggesting that Mike E & Emma should be presenting 2DayFM breakfast in 2025 even if it’s the sort of move that should’ve been made in 2022! Stranger things have happened, but it seems unlikely that Jimmy & Nath at breakfast will do much to move the ratings needle in Sydney.

Liked Hughsey and Ed they are quick witted and fun.
