RIP Shane Stedman OAM

Surfboard maker, Ugg boot inventor and legendary 2SM surf reporter Shane Stedman has died. A lifelong surfer himself well known around the Mona Vale beaches, Shane’s sonLuke would become a pro surfer himself with Shane factory boards still widely in use today.

Shane was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2024 for his service to the surfing industry. He said at the time:

“What I felt on learning of my nomination was that I was honoured and humbled, especially as my OAM is for having a lifetime of having fun.

“My brother (David Stedman OAM, 2022) received his for his hard work in helping foster unfortunate kids. He is currently on his seventy-fourth.”

His book, The Shane Gang, was a particularly wild and joyful ride through his career, with some of the spicy stories getting a few interviewers in a pickle as Shane told them as only he could.

Tim Webster on 2SM breakfast caught up with Luke to reflect on Shane’s life. You can listen to the chat below.
