UK charts to include audio streamers

Staff Writer

The UK is changing how their music charts are calculated.

From July, songs streamed over the internet, will also be included in the singles charts complied weekly by the Official Charts Company.

That will include audio streams from Spotify, Deezer, Napster and more.

The move follows an increase in streaming services with the total number of weekly audio streams selected by music fans growing from 100 million a week in January, 2013 to 200 million a week in January, 2014, to up to 260 million currently.

In doing the maths, 100 plays online will be equivalent to one record sale.

Indie rockers Bastille, whose song Pompeii has been revealed as Britain’s most streamed track ever, recorded the following message to announce the change.
