Ray Hadley slams Tony Abbott & John Howard over Pell support

Former Assistant Editor

Never one to hold back on the air, 2GB‘s Ray Hadley has lashed out at Tony Abbott and John Howard on his Mornings show.

Hadley took issue with both former Prime Ministers and their continued support for Cardinal George Pell despite the Cardinal’s conviction this week over historic sexual offences.

“Both Mr Howard and Mr Abbott, in my opinion, have shown a complete lack of understanding of victims of paedophiles,” said Hadley, before calling their responses to his conviction “gross errors of judgement.”

Since the suppression order on the verdict result was lifted earlier this week, Abbott publicly called Pell his “friend” and referred to the trial result as “devastating.”

It’s also been revealed that Howard submitted a character reference for the Cardinal, which said his high opinion of Pell has not been altered by his conviction.

“They may be vindicated in an appeal but in offering their opinions at the moment, particularly Mr Howard,” he said.

“I think it would have been more prudent for justice to take its course before a public exhibition of their support for a now convicted paedophile.”

This is a measured comment by Ray. Hardly deserves to be called a “rant”.

Jones has been supporting Pell on air this week. Hadley’s comments could lead to some interesting tensions in the corridors of 2GB.
